Well marked low in Bay of Bengal- a slow moving system

December 5, 2013 2:48 PM |

The well-marked low pressure in the Bay of Bengal still persists and stands a chance to become a mild cyclonic storm in India post 7th of December. This appears to be a slow moving system with weak potential for intensification. However, environmental conditions such as sea surface temperatures and wind patterns remain favourable for its gradual growth to become a depression shortly and a deep depression in another 48 hours. Click here to know what is a low pressure area.

Cloud configuration of this system suggests that it is located off the Tamil Nadu coast at around 8°N and 83°E latitudes. In view of the slow intensification and insignificant movement, rain remained confined to south coastal Tamil Nadu. Isolated heavy falls were witnessed in several areas- Nagapattinam recorded 58 mm of rain, Karaikal 81 mm, Pamban 12.8 mm and Trichi 2.5 mm. Interiors of the state including Chennai have hardly received any rain. Even Kerala has not received any rain in the last 24 hours. Though the intensity of rainfall has been showing a declining trend in the last couple of days, this system will continue to bring rain in South India. Accordingly, day temperatures remain slightly above normal in the range of 29 to 30 degrees.

Weather in North India

The Western Disturbance (WD) moving across Jammu & Kashmir in extreme northern latitudes have resulted in a drop in day temperatures across North India. Amritsar, Chandigarh and Ambala are near 24 degrees. Amritsar in the last 3 days, witnessed a successive drop in minimums, to settle at 6.8 degrees on Thursday morning. The weather in North India is expected to remain unchanged till the WD passes away resulting in a marginal rise in temperatures.
