After witnessing excess rains for the last six consecutive weeks, Northeast Monsoon rains have finally taken a back seat over Tamil Nadu.
In absence of any weather system, Northeast Monsoon remained weak over state during the week between December 10 and December 16. Tamil Nadu recorded 14.1 mm of rain against the monthly average of 20.7 mm, leading to deficiency in weekly rainfall by 32%.
Major contribution came from the extreme southern coastal parts of Tamil Nadu that included places such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Toothukudi.
Out of 33 districts of Tamil Nadu, 3 districts have received rain in excess between December 03 and December 09. While, three districts were normal and rest 27 districts were deficit or scanty.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rains will continue to be deficit during next week also. It will only be in last week of December, a weather system is likely to approach Tamil Nadu coast that could make up for the deficiency to some extent.
Northeast Monsoon that spans from October to December has great relevance for the state as it brings the major chunk of rainfall over Tamil Nadu. October ended on a poor note with rain deficiency of 26%, where state had recorded 133 mm of rain against the normal of 180 mm.
November was the rainiest, with state recording excess rainfall by 123%.Tamil Nadu received 380 mm of rain against monthly average of 170 mm.
For the overall season from October 1 till December 16, state has recorded 660.1 mm of rain against the normal rains of 413.6 mm. With this, state has witnessed 60% of excess rains so far.
