Western disturbance has arrived over the northern mountains. Two bubbles of cyclonic circulations are marked over Northeast and Northwest Rajasthan. A trough extends from North Rajasthan to Haryana, Delhi, Southwest Uttar Pradesh, and further eastward. Under the combined influence of these systems, the plains of north India are likely to have pre-monsoon activity over the next 3 days.
As such, there has been an uptick in pre-monsoon activity over many parts of the country. Following this activity, heat waves have abated from the eastern central and southern parts of the country. Temperatures over 40°C and ranging between 42°-43°C are confined to Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, North Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat. Parts of Haryana, bordering Rajasthan have mercury in the range of 40°-41°C. Rajasthan is the hottest with temperatures over 45°C over the border posts of West Rajasthan. Most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh have temperatures, under 40°C. Upcoming activity will restrict any rise in temperatures over these parts.
Weather activity over the Northern Plains will be scattered in spread and light to moderate in intensity. There is the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and some showers. But, the activity will not be strong enough to inflict any damage. Parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, North & East Rajasthan will witness this activity over the next 3 days, between 10th and 12th May 2024. Some gaps will come up over Punjab and Haryana on 12th May itself and the activity will vacate most of the region and will largely get confined to Southwest Rajasthan on 13th May. West Rajasthan may have some scattered dust storm activity, dropping the temperatures marginally, during this period.
Pre-monsoon activity over the northern plains will arrest the rise in temperature. Rather, these may drop by a few notches, following sharp showers and strong winds. Broad clearance can be expected over the plains from 14th May onwards. This is the time when the mercury will rise once again. Many locations, including Delhi, will soar back to 40°C and above. Heatwave is likely in some areas of North India from 14 -15 May. West Rajasthan will once again become the hottest part of the country.
