Finally, pre-monsoon heat is catching up with Delhi. Earlier, the month of April was rather comfortable and 40°C temperature was recorded just once, on 26thApril. The month of May has started on a hot note and the capital city recorded mercury in excess of 40°C, for two consecutive days, on the weekend. The record observatory at Safdarjung had the maximum temperature of 41.1°C, the highest of this season, so far. Earlier, on 26thApril, the highest temperature was 40.5°C.
The National capital and suburbs recorded temperatures in excess of 40°C yesterday, at most places. Pitampura and Najafgarh exceeded 43°C and Pusa, Ridge and Mungeshpur crossed 42°C. Delhi/NCR is coming up for a hot spell and mercury surpassing 40°C will be witnessed, this week at many places. Record observatories at Safdarjung and Palam are expected to breach 42°C on few occasions during this week. Coupled with strong surface winds, ‘loo’ conditions may also prevail, more so, around mid-week, on 08th& 09thMay 2024. The hot week concludes with promising showers around the weekend.
A mild western disturbance as an upper air system will affect the mountains on the 07th and 08thof May. An embedded cyclonic circulation will form close to Delhi tomorrow. This will be a dry feature, but the local heat can trigger a few clouds, with a meagre chance of a light sprinkle. The main system, quite an active one, will arrive on 09thMay. The support cyclonic circulation will come up over North Rajasthan and Punjab. A significant trough oriented largely east-west will run across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Rain and thundershowers are expected over and around Delhi between 10th and 12thMay. The remnant effect may even spill over to the start of next week. Most of the weather activity will happen in the late hours or early morning. Therefore, no big respite from the heat is expected, except for a day or two. Next week is expected to be further hotter than the running week. The base observatories at Safdarjung and Palam may breach the 43°C mark.
