Fresh spells of rain and snow will lash the northern mountains. Week-long activity for the hilly states will commence today itself. Western disturbance has arrived over the Western Himalayas, mainly as an upper-air weather system. This is being closely followed by another western disturbance, arriving over Jammu & Kashmir on 29th March. The two systems will nearly overlap each other. The second system is stronger than the first one, as it will be supported by its induced cyclonic circulation over the plains. The intensity and spread of weather activity over the hills will be stronger during the second episode.
Multilayered clouds have already reached across most parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. The state of Uttrakhand will also have the activity, starting with a cloudy sky tomorrow onwards. Weather activity will continue till the month's end and the remnant effect may even spill over to the opening days of next month.
Rain and thundershowers are likely in the lower hills. Scattered snowfall is expected over elevated peaks beyond 12,000 feet height. Intense weather activity will confine to Jammu & Kashmir and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Lightening strikes and hailstorms are also likely at a few places over Himachal Pradesh. The state of Uttrakhand will witness activity between the 28th and 31st of March and more of it in the last 2 days.
The severity of the weather may be contained and spare the inconvenience of disturbing normal life. Still, the prolonged duration of the inclement conditions may impact connectivity in a few pockets, for a brief period. Also, lightning strikes and hailstorms need to be best avoided by restricting travel and exposure. Hills are always mysterious and difficult to predict the scale and scope, of fierce weather conditions. Landslides, rockslides and road blockages remain a potential threat during the extended weather activity. Broad clearance can be expected on or after 02nd April 2024.
