Week Long Pre Monsoon Showers Over South India, No Heat Wave Likely

May 10, 2024 2:10 PM |

Southern parts of the country experienced prolonged dry and hot spells, in April and start of May. Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh was consistently the hottest pocket for many days.  Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddappah, and Nandyal persistently scored record temperatures in excess of 45°C, for days together. Pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity commenced around 06th May and is continuing. More showers are anticipated, lasting for the next week or so.

A pre-monsoon trough over the interiors of South India, a semi-permanent feature, remained dull during April. It became active around the first week of May, all along its stretch from Telangana to the interiors of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Anantapur, Madurai, Cochin, and Thiruvananthapuram received decent showers. Heat waves have abated since then and mercury levels of under 40°C, have been recorded, including over the interior parts.

Weather activity is likely to continue, at least for one week. The western half of Peninsular India will have increased activity as compared to the rest. The states of Karnataka and Kerala will have a bigger share than Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. North-South trough will extend from Telangana to Kerala, cutting across, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu.

An embedded cyclonic circulation is likely to form in this trough.  Spread and intensity of weather activity will increase over Karnataka on 12th&13thMay. The state of Kerala will have the escalation between 15th & 17th May. No heat wave is likely over South India during this period.
