Weather systems to revive Monsoon rains over East and Central India

Monsoon has gone mild across the country, with countrywide cumulative rainfall taking a significant dip. The excess rainfall which was excess by 3% on August 10 has gone down to zero on August 16.

Now, the fresh weather systems are all set to revive the Monsoon rains over Central and East India. However, it will continue to evade Peninsular India that is likely to see subdued rains only.

The depression in North Bay of Bengal has already given moderate to heavy rainfall over Odisha. This system is likely to move in west­northwest direction and cross West Bengal coast close to Digha anytime soon. It is also expected to intensify into deep depression during the next few hours.

Moreover, another fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop in North Bay of Bengal by August 20. This will also revive rains over Northeast India, which has been lying low for last few days.

Besides this, a cyclonic circulation is already prevailing over West Uttar Pradesh, while the axis of Monsoon trough is also running across the foothills of Himalayas.

Let us now have a look at outlook for the Monsoon rains from August 18 till August 20.

Rainfall forecast for August 18: Moderate to heavy rains are likely to lash parts of Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata, Jharkhand, Odisha, North Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh.

Few places are also likely to record extremely heavy rainy spells. According to weathermen, intensity of rains will be more over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Uttarakhand is also likely to witness fairly widespread moderate to heavy rains. With this, threat of flash floods, cloudburst and landslides also looms large.

Rainfall forecast for August 19: The depression will continue to move westwards and with this, rains will increase over West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Southeast Rajasthan. Scattered rains can also be expected over Vidarbha.

Light to moderate rains will continue over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal

Rainfall forecast for August 20: Good rains will continue over West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Southeast Rajasthan. Scattered rains are also likely over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh.
