Karnataka has been receiving scattered rain in the past few days. Several areas have recorded light showers keeping the maximums close to the normal levels. Now, as the weather system in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify, more showers are in the offing.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Belgaum recorded 26 mm of rainfall followed by Madikeri where 8 mm rain was received. Scattered light rain was also observed in isolated pockets of the state. However, Bangalore remained dry during this period.
Now, the weather system in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low. Also, it is likely to undergo further intensification and form a depression during the next 24 hours. The system currently lies over Sri Lanka and the Gulf of Mannar adjoining the Southwest Bay.
Now, this weather system is expected to hit Tamil Nadu coast south of Nagapattinam by May 17. During that time, heavy to very heavy rains are expected to lash most parts of South Peninsular India including South Interior Karnataka.
Several districts like Chamrajnagar, Mysore, Mandya, Bangalore, Dakshin Kannada, and Kodagu may also witness good showers. Isolated places in these areas may receive heavy rains as well. However, areas in North Interior Karnataka will only receive scattered rains.
