During the Southwest Monsoon season, several weather systems in the form of cyclonic circulations, lows and depressions come up in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. However, the Bay of Bengal section is more active as more systems develop over this part.

During this season as well, several Monsoon systems have developed over the Bay of Bengal enhancing the rainfall activity over the East Coast and subsequently over other parts of the country as well. Due to these systems, Monsoon has remained active throughout.

Just about a few days ago, a cyclonic circulation had formed in the Northwest Bay of Bengal. The system shifted and was located over North Bay of Bengal adjoining Gangetic West Bengal until early morning. Thereafter, the weather system intensified into a low pressure area but for just a short period of time.

Now, the Monsoon system has intensified into a well-marked low pressure area and lies over the same area. Thereafter, during the next 24 to 48 hours, the system may intensify into a depression as well.

This Monsoon system is likely to pound heavy to very heavy rains over several parts of East India including Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal during the next 24 to 48 hours. The possibility of three digit rains over these regions also cannot be ruled out.
