Weather in Uttar Pradesh: Rain in Lucknow, Agra, Meerut begin, crop damage on cards

February 14, 2019 2:21 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Rains have commenced over most parts of Northwest India including the western parts of Uttar Pradesh . During the last 24 hours from 8: 30 am on Wednesday, Jhansi has recorded 7 mm of rain, followed by Agra at 1 mm, Meerut 0.6 mm and Hamirpur 2 mm.

Now, another rainy spell is in sight over most parts of Uttar Pradesh, with rains already lashing western parts of the state like Agra, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, etc. These rains are on account of an active Western Disturbance that has induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Haryana and Punjab.

We expect widespread rain and thundershower activities to occur over most parts of Uttar Pradesh on February 14 and 15, as the weather systems will be moving east towards the state. Intensity of these rains will mostly be light to moderate.

Possibility of hailstorm activity over the northern parts of Uttar Pradesh cannot be ruled out. However, intensity of hailstorm over this region will be much lesser than that over Punjab and Haryana.

In fact, with such intense rains accompanied with hailstorm, crop damage is expected over many parts of Uttar Pradesh. Thus, we can say that these rains are going to bring a lot of disruption to farmers in terms of agricultural aspect.

Further, by February 16 evening, rains will start reducing over the state and from February 17, weather over Uttar Prdaesh will become almost dry.

Even though, Uttar Pradesh was the worst performer in terms of rainfall activity during the first half of January, but since then in wake of series of active Western Disturbances affecting the northern hills, the state has been observing good rain spells.

Therefore, at present, the entire state of Uttar Pradesh is experiencing near normal rains with rain surplus of about 1%. And with these rains in offing, we expect this surplus to increase further.
