Weather in Mumbai warmer this December

December 30, 2013 5:03 PM |

Mumbaikars seem to have lost the opportunity to flaunt their winter clothes this December as the Weather in Mumbai has been warmer compared to last year. According to our weather data, the minimum temperature which easily hovers around 13 degrees at this time of the year, settled at much higher temperatures making Mumbai quite warm during nights.

As the winter chill freezes people in North India around New Years, it is normal for the weather in Mumbai to turn cold. Cold northerly winds from North India trickle down to reach parts of Maharashtra and South India. There are times when the minimum temperatures in Mumbai drop as low as 11 degrees.

Mumbai recorded 11. 4⁰C as the minimum temperature during the end of December in 2011. On 29th December of 2012, the minimum temperature in Mumbai was recorded at 13.7⁰C which is again low for the city.

This year, the minimums settled at an average of 18⁰C, which is four to five degrees more than last year’s figures. It was only once this month (22nd December), when the night temperature in Mumbai touched 14.8⁰C. This can be easily linked to the cold weather in North India around the same dates.

“The main reason for the weather in Mumbai to have been warmer this time is the formation of anti-cyclonic circulations in Central India which were blocking the flow of cold northerly winds from the hills of North India”, says meteorologist Mahesh Palawat at skymetweather.com

However, expected changes in weather in North India could possibly drop minimums in Mumbai as well in the coming few days.
