Weather in Gujarat to clear up in next 24 hours

In wake of combined influence of the Western Disturbance and its induced Cyclonic Circulation over North India, wind profile has undergone a change over the entire Gujarat region. As relatively warmer winds coming from the sea is gripping the state, minimums over coastal areas such as Porbandar, Dwarka and Jamnanagar have gone above 15℃.

Similarly, minimums are at present above normal over interior parts. Further, due clouding over Saurashtra and Kutch regions which had extended up to interior parts, rains have lashed Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh and Kandla during last 24 hours. Moreover, these rains are not somewhat regular affair particularly for a state like Gujarat that records least rainfall activity in the month of January.

However, in the next 24 hours, we expect the above system to move in east direction, thereby clearing up the weather over Gujarat region. This shifting of the system would also cause winds to change its direction again. Thus, January 24 onward, ongoing south-westerlies will once again convert into north-easterlies. When this happens, temperatures would again drop. However, this time the drop will not be a steep one so as to induce cold wave conditions over the state. Although, there are chances that these may slip to single digits over some places. Moreover, coastal stations would come on the warmer side during this time thereby making the conditions comfortable for the residents.

Gujarat normally records minimums in double digits only. It is only on account of some extreme weather conditions, these slip to single digits over interiors parts of the state. In the recent past, i.e. couple of weeks ago, the state witnessed two notable spells of single digit temperature wherein minimums over Naliya went down to 4.4℃. The period also witnessed Cold Wave conditions in some pockets. This was in wake of cold northwesterly winds which were continuously blowing over the state.

Moreover, the state of Gujarat observes least weather activity in terms of fog and rain during the winter season. However, the state records low minimums throughout the winters. Weather of Gujarat is largely governed by the weather over North India as arrival and departure of successive Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations keep increasing and decreasing the temperatures. Thus, mercury here keeps playing rise and fall game almost in every five to six days.

Further, because of the state’s long coastline, conditions remain poles apart in interior and coastal parts of the state. Interiors of Gujarat such as Deesa, Mehsana and Sunder Nagar witness harsh winters. On the other hand, places in proximity to sea such as Dwarka, Surat and Baruch observe mild winters. Moreover, the interior most part of Gujarat such as Bhuj tops in recording below normal minimums while places exactly on the coastline such as Naliya always fails to record any significant minimums.
