Weaker rains from a weaker system will bring more relief than worries

July 16, 2013 5:08 PM |

Formation of cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal is nothing unusual in India in the monsoon months. These systems often bring good rain and prove to be a boon for the suffering paddy crops if any. But a weaker system this time will lead to lesser rains, though it will not concern farmers much.

A cyclonic circulation formed in north Bay of Bengal in the last 48hours and then moved to the Andhra and Orissa coast. As a result moderate rains with heavy in some pockets took place in these areas yesterday. Machlipatnam and Ramagundum in Andhra recorded 43mm and 21mm of rain respectively, whereas Jharsuguda in Orissa recorded 42mm of rain.

Though the system lies currently at Orissa, it has moved southwestwards towards Madhya Pradesh. The effect of this system will therefore give moderate rain with isolated heavy rain (i.e. beyond 50mm) in parts of south and east Madhya Pradesh and at Vidharbha region.

Central India has been receiving light rain so far which may now increase in intensity. Bhopal witnessed 5mm of rain in the last 24hours, Guna-20mm, Nagpur-3mm and Akola 8mm.

Exactly a month back heavy rains in Kalahandi district of Orissa had severely affected paddy crops. A whopping loss was suffered by farmers due to incessant rain in southern and western regions of Orissa due to which 678 families became homeless and standing paddy crop in 17,051 acres were damaged.

Rain in Orissa will be very light now since the system has moved away towards other regions of the country. “We are keeping a close eye on the developments of any new system in the sea and we shall keep updating about it regularly”, assures Mahesh Palawat, Head of the weather forecasting team at Skymet Weather.
