As we enter the last round of Northeast Monsoon, we can observe the changes in terms of reduced rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The low pressure, which gave good amounts of rain in the states in the last couple of days has also weakened and there is not much happening weather wise in South India.
In the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Monday there has been scattered light rain in parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Tondi, in Tamil Nadu is the only place that observed some good rain of about 20 mm. Other places in Tamil Nadu like Pamban recorded 12 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 10 mm, Tiruchirapalli 9 mm, Kodaikanal 14.7 mm, Palayamkottai 5.4 mm and Coonoor 5.9 mm. Similarly, Punalur in Kerala recorded 1 mm of rain, Thiruvananthapuram 1.6 mm and Kottayam 5.2 mm.
From the above rainfall figures we can see that some interior parts have also received rain though, it has been light. This is because of the weakening of the low pressure area. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, when a system weakens the spread of rainfall increases before it dies completely.
Meanwhile, there isn’t any system building in the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea anytime soon due to which the Northeast Monsoon will almost take a break.
Northeast Monsoon’s performance in November had been very poor, except during the last 3-4 days when some good amounts of rain was observed in Tamil Nadu and Kerala due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. December too does not look very promising for Northeast Monsoon rains.
