Bengaluru is situated at a height of 3000 ft above the sea level due to which weather conditions in the city are pleasant in comparison to its neighbouring areas. Temperature are usually comfortable with afternoon hours being a little warm. Winters are very mild in the city and pre-monsoon season begins from the month of March.
As soon as pre-monsoon arrives, the day temperatures which are in its lower 30s start rising from the second half of March. But this time the scenario has been a little different. According to Skymet, the mercury on February 25 had touched 35.5°C, which is very unusual for the month because the average temperature normally hovers around 30°C.
A similar start to the month of March is being witnessed in the city. The day temperatures are consistently settling between 35°C-36°C, usually seen in the second half of the month. For instance the maximum recorded 35.7°C on March 6, which is above the monthly average. The maximum for today,i.e. March 7 has been recorded at 37°C.
The wind patterns can largely be held responsible for the change. The weather in the city doesn’t get much affected by the coastline because of its proximity. Thus, it tends to get more heated. And when winds are light with a feeble trough, the area warms up.
Whenever there is maximum turning of winds, the winds slow down. These troughs are responsible for giving thunderstorm activities as well. Excess heat always acts as a trigger to these weather activities. These activities are a momentary thing, hence thunderstorm with light rains in the city of Bengaluru can be a sight by tomorrow or day after. However, these rains would be patchy in nature.
According to experts, trough over these regions becomes a semi-permanent feature. These are basically known as Peninsular Troughs having an oscillating nature.
Pleasant days would make a comeback in the month of May. The number of thunderstorm activities in terms of duration and frequency are more in May than in March and April. May records about 107 mm of rains on an average basis whereas April sees an average of 41 mm. For the month of January and February, nil thunderstorm activity is observed.
During monsoons, i.e., from June to August, the weather turns out to be pleasant. The cover of clouds acts as a shield against the temperatures.
