Even with timely arrival of Southwest Monsoon along the West Coast and most of southern states of the country, rains stayed rare and distant over Chennai.

Unlike, the other parts of the country, Tamil Nadu receive very less rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon from June to September. This is for the reason that it lies in a rain shadow area and the winds which pick up moisture from Arabian Sea drains it over the Western Ghats. So, dry winds grasp the state leading to scanty rainfall.

The last 24 hours were not different for the region as no rain activity was recorded. Though June remained mostly dry but few occasional good showers like on June 19 and 23 led the city exceeds its monthly average rainfall figure. For the month of June, Chennai has recorded 91.2 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average of 55.9 mm.
