Winters in India are generally related to woolen clothes, hot mug of tea or coffee and the foggy weather outside. Though the first two are feasible for the people of North India these days, despite the chilly weather, the dense foggy mornings' have remained absent from showing up.

The mornings in the northwestern plains are fog-free these days while northeastern parts of the country are reeling under foggy mornings. Generally, during the latter half of December, foggy weather engulfs most parts of North India in states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana which is absent this month as of now.

There are three factors that help in the formation of fog namely low temperatures, high humidity, and light winds. In case of North India, the humidity levels are low, the temperatures are though in single digits, have increased slightly in the last 48 hours. However, the third factor that is the speed of winds is not low rather is moderate in nature.

Thus, most parts of northern plains are not witnessing fog from the last 48 hours. However, the wind speed is expected to slow down within the next 48 hours, thus fog may make a comeback during the early morning or late night hours.

In contrast to this, the eastern and northeastern region of the country has been witnessing moderate to dense fog during the early morning and night hours. Particularly, the foggy morning are prevailing in parts of East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar,  Meghalaya, and NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura) region.

On Monday, the visibility levels dropped to nil in parts of Gorakhpur and Siliguri, while it remained under 100 meters in Agartala. In Patna, the visibility levels dropped to 200 meters and Guwahati and Kolkata recorded the visibility levels under 300 and 500 meters respectively.

As per Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over the eastern parts of Bangladesh. Moreover, the winds over the eastern states of the country are easterly-southeasterly and light in nature. In addition to this, the moisture is increasing over the region and this moisture content is sufficient enough to induce fog formation over the region.

Moreover, the sky is also clear leading to rapid cooling of earth’s surface. All these factors are favorable for fog formation over East and Northeast India.

This is the reason that the eastern and northeastern regions of the country have been recording foggy morning while the mornings in North India remained clear and fog-free. However, the fog in parts of the East and Northeast India starts clearing up as the temperatures start rising during the afternoon hours due to bright sunshine.
