Violent Dust storms and Thunderstorms Batter North India:

May 11, 2024 2:37 PM |

Parts of North India, including Delhi, were lashed by severe dust storms and thunderstorms on the evening of May 10th. The storms brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat but unfortunately, also caused damage and loss of life.

The weather system brought isolated to scattered rainfall along with dust storms and even isolated hailstorms across Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Wind speeds at the Palam Observatory in Delhi reached a staggering 90 kmph at 9:30 pm, causing a rapid temperature drop from 34°C to 28°C within just one hour.

The ferocity of the storm resulted in tragic consequences. Sadly, two lives were lost in Delhi, and 23 people were injured. Uprooted trees and widespread property damage added to the chaos.

Lingering Threat and Hope for Relief

The storm's impact wasn't limited to Delhi. Parts of West Uttar Pradesh and Haryana also faced the brunt of the dust storms and thunderstorms. The culprit behind this erratic weather is a cyclonic circulation persisting over northwest Rajasthan, creating atmospheric instability.

The residents in Delhi, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, east Rajasthan, and isolated pockets of West Uttar Pradesh can expect rain, thunderstorms, and dust storms with the possibility of isolated hailstorms for another 24 hours.

The good news is that this pre-monsoon activity is expected to bring a much-needed break from the ongoing heatwave. While there's still a chance of damage to life and property, the rain will significantly improve the situation.

Looking Ahead: Positive Signs for Farmers

The pre-monsoon activity nay continue in Northeast, Central, and South India in the coming days. This widespread rainfall promises to be a boon for farmers, as it will significantly enhance soil moisture content, creating ideal conditions for the upcoming crops.

The return of the heatwave seems unlikely for the foreseeable future. This period of rain across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and the South Peninsula will significantly benefit agriculture in the region.
