Southwest Monsoon has remained vigorous over Maharashtra in the last couple of days. During the last 24 hours, extremely heavy rains have lashed the Konkan Coast. The meteorological division of Madhya Maharashtra too has experienced heavy downpour. Meanwhile, Vidarbha and Marathwada have recorded light to moderate rain with isolated heavy spells.
According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, vigorous Monsoon has triggered 440 mm of rainfall in Matheran in a span of just 24 hours. While Alibag has recorded 411 mm of rain, Thane 342 mm, Mahabaleshwar 306 mm, Ratnagiri 154 mm, Nashik 99 mm, Vengurla 93 mm, Jalgaon 52 mm, Kolhapur 51 mm, Satara 49 mm of rainfall, in the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday.
Now, due to the strong surge and extending of offshore Trough from South Maharashtra up to Kerala Coast, the Monsoon conditions are likely to remain vigorous along the Konkan Coast during the next 18 to 24 hours.
After 24 hours, the rainfall activities would enhance over Vidarbha as a Low-Pressure Area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal. This system would be moving across the central parts of the country, hence parts of Vidarbha will record moderate rains with isolated heavy spells. These activities are likely for the next three to four days. By this time, rains will taper along the Konkan Coast, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada.
Places like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Santa Cruz, Ratnagiri, Harnai, Colaba, Dahanu, etc will record heavy showers, while places like Nagpur, Chandrapur, Beed, Latur, Jalgaon, Amravati, Yavatmal, Nanded will get to see light to moderate rain and thundershowers for the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Aurangabad and Nashik will receive moderate spells of rain. Heavy rains may give rise to flood-like conditions in some parts along the West Coast. While landslides are likely over the hilly regions of Maharashtra.
As on August 3, Madhya Maharashtra is a rain surplus by 41%, while Marathwada is still rain deficient by 19%. The deficiency of Vidarbha has improved and currently sitting at only 3%. Due to upcoming heavy showers, we expect a further improvement in the rain surplus of Konkan and Goa.
