Southwest Monsoon has been active over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other states in Northeast India. During last 24 hours, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya received a whopping 265.7 mm of rainfall. Guwahati in Assam has also received 114 mm of rainfall.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has occurred over Assam and Meghalaya and many other parts of Northeast India. At present, the axis of the Monsoon trough is reaching up to Bihar and West Bengal. Moreover, moisture incursion is taking place from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India, leading to extremely heavy rains over the region.
Now, we expect the eastern end of Monsoon trough to shift towards the northeastern states. Thus, heavy to extremely heavy rains will continue for another 2 to 3 days over many parts of Northeast India.
During the Monsoon season, Northeast India remains one of the rainiest regions of the country along with the West Coast. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is not very unusual.
Nevertheless, almost all the states of Northeast India are rain deficient at the moment. Assam and Meghalaya have received less rain to the tune of 36% as of July 16. Arunachal Pradesh is rain deficient by 14% but Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura have performed much better.
This rain episode is likely to last for the next few days. Expect fairly widespread rainfall may bring down rain deficiencies to a great extent.
