Vigorous Monsoon mars Coastal Maharashtra with three-digit rainfall

Very heavy Monsoon rains have been going on over Coastal Maharashtra since the last few days. However, last 24 hours have seen some vigorous Monsoon conditions that pounded extremely heavy three-digit rainfall over most parts of the region.

With 389 mm of rain, Mahabaleswar was the rainiest city of not only the region but of the entire country in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. This was also the highest rainfall recorded in 24 hours during the last 10 years.

This was followed by Harnai at 212 mm of rain, which also recorded highest rainfall in 24 hours in last eight years.

According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to the off-shore trough running from South Gujarat to Coastal Karnataka. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also prevailing over Gujarat region, which is further enhancing the Monsoon surge over these areas.

As we progress further, we expect moderate to heavy rains will continue over most parts of the region for the next 2-3 days. Isolated places can also see extremely heavy showers.

Mumbai is also likely to record moderate to heavy showers, ranging from 30-50 mm. However, one or two places in Mumbai or suburbs may record intense heavy showers for short duration.

The ongoing rains have also increased the cumulative rain surplus over the Konkan and Goa region, which as on August 1 stands at is 21%.

Following are the rainfall figures recorded across the region in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday:
