Ever since the arrival of Southwest Monsoon over West Bengal, rains have been occurring over Kolkata. In fact, there has seldom been a rainy day for the capital city of West Bengal in the month of July.

From moderate to heavy and extremely heavy, Kolkata rains have seen it all. In fact, the City of Joy has witnessed extremely heavy rain in the last 24 hours as well wherein, both the Alipore and Dum Dum Observatory had recorded three digit rains of 107.3 mm and 119 mm of rains.

Counting on these rains, the Alipore Observatory had already recorded 261.4 mm of rains so far in the month of July as against its monthly mean of 396 mm. Moreover, more rains are expected to lash the city in the next 24 hours. Taking such hefty sum of rains into consideration, it seems that Kolkata will be able to surpass its monthly target very easily.

The other districts of West Bengal that recorded good rains in the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday include Coochbehar that observed extremely heavy showers of 93.8 mm, Bagati 47 mm, Burdwan 24 mm, Sri Niketan 14 mm, Midnapore 14 mm and Bankura witnessed 13.6 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation persists over Bihar and a trough is passing from this system towards Gangetic West Bengal. On account of this weather system, Kolkata and the adjoining regions were lashed by moderate to heavy showers.

Moreover, this trough is likely to continue to persist along Gangetic West Bengal for another 24 hours. As a result, moderate showers with a few heavy spells are likely to continue lashing Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However, thereafter, the trough is anticipated to shift towards Odisha thereby resulting in the intensity to reduce.
