In the wake of Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu, the state of Maharashtra has been observing good rains for quite some time now. In fact, some areas of Madhya Maharashtra like Pune and Nashik have recorded heavy rains during the last 24 hours.

According to the data available with Skymet, Harnai has recorded 81 mm of rainfall, followed by Ratnagiri 47 mm, Mahabaleshwar 32 mm and Colaba (Mumbai) 19 mm, during the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Wednesday.

Have a look at the top 10 rainiest places in Maharashtra:

The reason for these rains can be attributed to the Severe Cyclonic Storm Vayu that was lying parallel to the city of Mumbai, yesterday, during the afternoon hours. Thereafter, the system started moving in a north/northwest direction and is presently stationed near Porbandar in Gujarat. Due to this system, south/south-westerlies are blowing across the coastal stations of Maharashtra.

In the wake of these systems, light to moderate rains will continue in many parts of Maharashtra such as Harnai, Ratnagiri, Mahabaleshwar, Colaba, Santa Cruz (Mumbai), Matheran and Nashik.

For the next 24 hours, south/southwesterly winds will blow with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph. The sea conditions are expected to remain very rough during this period, thus fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.

June 15 onwards, the intensity of rains will increase over entire Maharashtra. During this period, many parts of Vidarbha, that have been reeling under heat weave conditions until now, would witness good rains.
