Very dense fog engulfs Delhi, Northwest and East India

January 6, 2018 11:55 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Fog has engulfed parts of Northwestern and Northeast India. Delhiites woke up to a foggy morning. Fog layer was so dense that the visibility in Delhi reduced to 50 meters during the early morning hours. The fog layer started to disseminate along with time. However, until 10 am, shallow fog persisted over the national capital. The blanket of fog curated problems in rail, air and road traffic. Many flights and trains were delayed.

Skymet weather had already stated that now, the depth of fog layer is decreasing and hence the sun would come out early. It is expected that the duration of sunshine will increase leading to comfortable day and sunny sky conditions. Meanwhile, dense fog will be observed over Delhi for a short duration during early morning hours and the visibility will be poor initially, however, it will improve gradually.

Dense fog was also observed over most parts of Northwestern Plains including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In fact, moderate fog occurred over parts of West Rajasthan, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya as well. As per weathermen, the speed of wind is likely to increase further and the intensity of fog will reduce and the depth of the layer of fog will also decrease.

Due to prolonged sunshine, we expect cold day conditions to start abating from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh. The layer of dense to very dense fog will persist over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the morning hours for another two to three days. However, fog over Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi will reduce as the northwesterly winds will gain speed and push the layer of fog towards the East.
