Dense to very dense fog has begun to disrupt normal life in several parts of India.
On Thursday morning, Amritsar in Punjab recorded very dense fog with visibility reducing to nil. This was followed by Chandigarh with low visibility of 800 meters.
In East India, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh reported low visibility of 400 meters and Lucknow 150 meters. While Patna in Bihar also witnessed dense fog with the visibility of just 200 meters.
The impact of fog belt has stretched and covered northwestern plains as well, wherein Delhi recorded low visibility of 150 meters with dense fog enveloping most parts of the state.
Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh too reported very dense fog with visibility dropping to 50 meters, followed by Raipur 500 meters which also observed thick fog.
In fact, Bangalore, in particular, the city is not prone to thick foggy conditions. However, today morning the residents witnessed shallow fog with visibility of 800 meters.
Several flights and trains have been delayed or re-scheduled due to the low visibility causing inconvenience to the travellers. Around 171 trains have been delayed across the country. Click here for the train status.
With these conditions persisting, we do not expect any significant changes in the weather and entire Northwest and East India will be under the realm of dense to very fog for the next few days as well.
According to Skymet Weather, the reason for this widespread fog can be attributed to the change in wind pattern from northwesterly to easterly which has increased the levels of humidity over the region.
Moreover, the wind speed, at present, is also light. Minimum temperatures are also very low at this time. All these factors are ideal for the formation of the fog over the region. Therefore, we can expect maximum temperatures to now start falling marginally over the entire region.
