Cyclone Vardah which formed on the Southeast Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. Vardah has continued to maintain its strength as a very severe cyclone. However, the system is expected to weaken gradually but will make landfall as a severe cyclone only.
Just about a day ago, the system was moving towards Andhra Coast and Chennai was only expected to receive light to moderate rains. However, yesterday, the storm changed its direction and decided to straight away target Chennai.
Now, the storm is expected to hit Chennai during the afternoon hours of today. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely over the capital city. So much so that extremely heavy rainy spells are expected over the city as the storm nears the city. The city has already recorded 57 mm of rainfall since last night.
Currently, Cyclone Vardah is at least 105 km ENE from Chennai. The authorities have been preparing themselves for the storm and over 4000 people have been evacuated from the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
