Varanasi receives good rains as Monsoon system gets closer

August 12, 2016 8:52 AM |

Rain in varanasiMonsoon rains in Varanasi during August have showed a mixed trend. While a few days have been completely dry, the city has recorded moderate to heavy rains on the other days. All in all, Southwest Monsoon has been positive for the holy city this month.

Heavy rains were recorded over Varanasi two days before when the city recorded 40.4 mm of rain. However, there was a gap in between for a day when dry weather conditions were observed. Now, the good news is that Monsoon rains have once again picked up pace.

During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Varanasi recorded a good 41 mm of rainfall. The next 24 hours are also expected to bring in some rains for the city.

These rains can be attributed to the depression which is currently lying over Jharkhand and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal. Also, the axis of Monsoon trough is running in close proximity of Varanasi.

During the next 24 to 48 hours, the depression is likely to weaken into a low pressure area. The systems will move in a west-northwest direction closer to the city and thus, more rains are likely over the city.

So far, Varanasi has recorded 157.7 mm of rainfall against its monthly average rains of 255.3 mm. With good number of days left in the month, the city will be able to surpass its monthly rains with ease.
