This Southwest Monsoon, several parts of Uttar Pradesh has recorded on and off Monsoon rains. The typical Monsoon rains that should have occurred over the state remained absent, however northwest parts of the state as well as foothills continued with good spells.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Jhansi recorded a good 33 mm of rainfall, followed by Lucknow 24 mm, Sultanpur 18 mm, Gorakhpur 15 mm, Allahabad 11 mm, Shahjahanpur 10 mm, Agra 9 mm, Kanpur 7 mm and Varanasi 5 mm.
At present, the axis of Monsoon trough is running South of Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is lying over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. This system is likely to intensify into a low pressure area.
Thus, moderate showers will begin over many parts of Uttar Pradesh particularly Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Allahabad and Lucknow.
Bit by bit, the intensity of these rains will increase and most parts of East Uttar Pradesh will observe good rains. One or two places may also receive heavy showers. Comparatively, the intensity of these showers is expected to be more over East Uttar Pradesh than West Uttar Pradesh.

In the coming days, the rain statistics of the state will recover. At present, East Uttar Pradesh is rain deficit by 2 percent and West Uttar Pradesh by 9 percent.
Weathermen expect light to moderate showers to persist rains over numerous places of Uttar Pradesh for 24 to 48 hours. With these showers, both sub divisions of the state may become rain surplus.
