Heavy rains have remained unstoppable in Uttarakhand since the last 24 hours. Rains have wreaked havoc as nearly 17 people lost their lives due to a cloudburst in the Uttarkashi region of Uttarakhand on Sunday.

Many people are still stranded, while some missing as the heavy rains continue to batter the state.

According to Uttarkashi Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal, “Eight bodies have been recovered so far, five from Makudiand, three from Arakot village. Many people are still missing. Nearly 6 villages have been hit by heavy rains. One body was recovered from the Sanel village adjoining Arakot and Makudi.

The devastating rains have washed away several houses and hectares of agricultural lands. Rescue operations have been going on in the state on a large scale. People are being moved to safer areas and relief materials are being provided to them.

In the wake of heavy downpour, government schools and Anganwadi Kendra in nine out of the 13 districts have been ordered to remain shut on Monday.

The Monsoon rains will ease out a bit in Himachal Pradesh now, but due to easterly winds that will continue to feed moisture over the Himalayas, we expect Uttarakhand to receive isolated heavy spells. Thus, flood fury will continue.
