Southwest Monsoon once again has gained momentum over the hilly state of Uttarakhand. Vigorous Monsoon rains have been observed over Uttarakhand over the last 2 days.

At present the axis of the Monsoon trough is passing through Ferozepur, Hisar, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Pendra, Bhubaneswar, and further towards central Bay of Bengal. Though it has shifted little southwards away from the foothills, rains will continue over Uttarakhand for now. Moreover, the Western Disturbance is also moving across East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Tibet region.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in Uttarakhand during last 24 hours:

According to media reports, 11 people have been killed across the state over the past 48 hours. Road accidents and landslides could be blamed for these incidents.

It has not even been a week since Uttarakhand was severely affected by torrential rains. If we look into the entire week, at least 25 people have lost their lives in rains related accidents across the state.

In the wee hours of Saturday, a house collapsed due to heavy rain in the Purval village of Tehri district’s Ghansali region. This mishap killed a mother and her two children in their sleep. A minibus also fell into a gorge near the Bemunda region in Tehri district, killing three people.

On Saturday, rail traffic was disrupted as a pillar of the railway bridge collapses in Uttarakhand.

The situation is likely to deteriorate further over next 48 hours. Landslides and mudslides cannot be ruled out over several parts of the state. As of now, level of Ganga stood at 292.75 meter in Haridwar, against the danger mark of 294 meter.
