Uttarakhand Floods 1

Monsoon rains are in no mood to stop its wrath over the country especially the hilly areas. At present, the axis of Monsoon trough is passing through Anupgarh, Churu, Gwalior, Banda, Daltongunj, Midnapore and goes up to Northeast Bay of Bengal.

There happens to be a Western Disturbance and an upper air cyclonic circulation that persists over Jammu & Kashmir. The rainfall over Uttarakhand is likely to intensify within next 24-48 hours. Most districts of the state have received excess rainfall and the additional rain over the area may further aggravate the flooding in some places.

Landslides and mudslides are also a possibility over hilly parts of the state. Rain is a daily happening there and more rain is expected in a day or two.

In the last 21 hours, Pant Nagar has received 70 mm of rainfall. At present, the state of Uttarakhand is at a rainfall surplus of 15%.

In the wake of such incessant rainfall, the government of Uttarakhand has asked for an assistance of Rs. 500 crore from the Center in order to aid the large-scale damage caused by the rains and landslides.

People from as many as 350 different villages across Uttarakhand have been relocated to safer places. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that the loss is of Rs.1000 crore as of now but by the end of Monsoon, the state is likely to endure losses of up to Rs. 1,500 crore.

CM Rawat further added, “With 70 per cent of land covered with forests we don’t have enough land to relocate these villages all by ourselves. We need a huge amount of forest land for this purpose in which the Centre can be of great help.”
