State of Uttar Pradesh has witnessed multiple hazardous weather conditions over the last few days. Foothills of West Uttar Pradesh, adjacent to Uttarakhand have witnessed damaging rains, flooding low lying areas and raising rivers water level. Rampur, Pilibhit, Bareilly have risked the wrath of intense rains. Mainpuri was struck with lightening claiming precious lives. The eastern borders have experienced frequent bouts of sharp showers. In spate Rapti river has endangered the city of Gorakhpur. Threat has been mounting on account of heavy rains in the mountainous state of Nepal, amassing enormous rains in the catchment areas. Rivers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, down the foothills of Nepal have become dangerous with quantum release of water, encroaching embankments. Flood water has traced its way to riparian cities downstream. Situation is critical and worrisome, imposing threat to the life and material resources.
The monsoon trough has shifted north of its normal position above 3000 feet level, close to the foothills of Uttar Pradesh. Such situation endangers Indo-Gangetic plains, more so, the northern half of Uttar Pradesh. The eastern belt of Uttar Pradesh was grappling with large deficit in June, which now has slipped in to excess category. Even, the western parts are fairly placed with above normal seasonal rainfall.
The state will come in for relief from the monsoon fury. Foothills, getting marooned so far, will have a long breather to recuperate. Normal monsoon activity will carry on but the troubling spells triggering lightening lightning strikes, localized flooding, rushing water in the rivers, breaking of river banks etc. will calm down. The state will get a breather to carry out relief and rehabilitation.
A low pressure area is likely to form over Bay of Bengal (BoB) shortly. Precursor to the system, a cyclonic circulation will appear, fairly well organized, acting savior for the state. The monsoon trough will be dragged far to the south of Indo-Gangetic plains, shifting the activity center of monsoon. The state will have to bare with the escalated monsoon fury for the next two days, more so tomorrow. The goal post, thereafter, will shift to the central parts of the country. Southward shift of the monsoon trough will take the vigorous monsoon zone to run across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
