Since the beginning of year 2019, Western Himalayan range has been witnessing intermittent rain and snow. The month of January recorded few heavy to very heavy spells as well. As per the statistics, the state of Uttarakhand has received precipitation in excess and at present is 47% surplus.
Now, a fresh Western Disturbance would be affecting the hills of Jammu and Kashmir around evening of February 4. It is expected that Uttarakhand would start receiving rain and snow by February 5 and its intensity would be more on February 7. A deep level trough is also expected to form over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh by then. Hence, heavy to very heavy spells in terms of rain and snow will be seen between February 7 and 8.
As per Vice President Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, Mr. Mahesh Palawat, this spell of rain and snow could be the heaviest one for this season. Chances of hailstorm also seem very bright. Not only this, it is expected that the precipitation would be much more over Uttarakhand in comparison to Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Such heavy rain and snow might cause widespread damage to horticulture and Rabi crops that include Apple, Mango, Orange and Wheat. Although, the intensity would recede from the night of February 8, but weather would clear up only on February 9.
Landslides and flashfloods are possible in many areas with incidents of cloud burst in offing. Adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh like Saharanpur, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad might have to bear the brunt of this inclement weather conditions. Local flooding can also be not ruled out in these areas.
