Southwest Monsoon had gone weak and slow for over a week which caused delayed onsets over many parts of the country. During the first half of the month, the country had recorded 19 percent surplus rains.
However, with this lull spell, the surplus rains switched to deficiency throughout the country. Thus, as on June 25, the rainfall deficiency stood at 12 percent. In fact, the country saw eight straight deficient rainfall days.
Good news is that the revival has begun under the influence of a circulation on Bay of Bengal adjoining Odisha and West Bengal region. Another circulation was over Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat region in the mid-levels. These systems pushed the Monsoon advancement over central and northern parts of the country.

In fact, yesterday only, heavy rainfall activity was witnessed over the country wherein against the daily normal of 7.6 mm, 9.1 mm was witnessed which is 19 percent excess. This has reduced the rainfall deficiency from 12 percent to 10 percent.
Normal rains will be around 8 mm and will be covered during the next few days at least. However, it does not seem that the entire deficiency will be covered in the next few days.
Except South India, the entire country is expected to see rainfall activity. Even West Coast, which is the rainiest pocket will remain an under-par performer. With the upcoming rains, Monsoon is expected to cover more parts of North India including Delhi and the NCR region during the next 48 hours.
