Upcoming Cyclone to give heavy rains over Odisha, flash floods possible

October 8, 2018 5:29 PM | Skymet Weather Team

During the first week of October, Odisha has received very little rain. As on October 7, Odisha remains largely deficient with -96% ‘below-normal’ rains. Now, a depression has formed over Southeast and adjoining East-central Bay of Bengal. This depression will gradually move in northwest direction towards Odisha coast and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm as well, named Titli.

We expect scattered rains to commence over the state on October 9 evening. Gradually, the intensity of rain will increase and moderate to heavy rainfall with one or two very heavy spells are possible over Odisha until October 11.

By October 12, rain intensity will decrease over southern districts, but North-central Odisha will continue to get good rains. Places like Puri, Balasore, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Angul and Kendujhar, Jajpur and Kendrapara may receive heavy rains during this time. By the weekend, we expect rain deficiency of Odisha to come down to a great extent.

Month of October is a favorable period for the formation of low-pressure areas, depressions and cyclones over Bay of Bengal. These weather systems usually move in a northwest direction and affects Andhra, Odisha and West Bengal coast.

These heavy rains may trigger flash floods and water logging in many areas. Weather will start clearing up from October 13 onwards and rain intensity will reduce significantly.
