Unusual winter in Chandigarh this season

punjab cold Entire North India is reeling under severe cold day conditions as temperatures are recording 6 degrees below normal on an average. And the situation in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana is almost similar, except that the drop in day temperature is huge. For instance, the maximum temperature recorded in the city on January 12 was 14.6°C, which is almost 7 degrees below the normal average for the month. On January 11 it was the lowest of the season at 9.9°C.

On January 7 also the maximum had dropped to record 10.5°C, which is almost 11 degrees below the monthly average of 21°C. During the remaining days of the month the day temperature has been recording 5-6 degrees below normal on an average.

On the other hand, the minimums have been recording higher than the usual. On January 4, the minimum temperature in Chandigarh had settled at 11.2°C, which is 5 degrees above the monthly average of 6.1°C. A day earlier, on January 3, the minimum had recorded 12°C, highest of the month so far.

In the last few days the night temperatures have however, returned to normal with the city recording 5.8°C as the minimum on Tuesday morning. And with half the month almost over we expect it to drop further. In the past we have seen minimums dropping as low as 0.6°C, recorded on January 9, 2011.

Another unusual weather activity observed in the city in the last two months is the rainfall amounts. On December 13, Chandigarh recorded 74 mm of rain, which is higher than the monthly average of 21.9 mm. In January too, the city has received 18 mm of rain so far against the average of 33 mm.

More number of foggy days is also being observed in Chandigarh this winter. The average number of fog days in January is 0.1, while in December it is zero.
