Unseasonal rain in Delhi may enhance fears of dengue and chikungunya

October 2, 2016 11:27 AM |

Rain in DelhiDelhi has been witnessing warm and dry conditions for the last many days. It seemed like Monsoon was long gone even before formal withdrawal. However, a rainy spell is in the offing for delhiites now.

This is because of multiple weather activities prevailing in close proximity to Delhi and NCR. The cyclonic circulation which is lying over Vidarbha and adjoining areas will move in a westerly direction. At present, winds over Delhi are flowing in from the easterly direction. Moreover, a feeble anti-cyclone has formed over Central Pakistan, due to which northwesterly winds are reaching towards Haryana and Delhi.

The combination of these two winds, humid easterly and dry northwesterly winds, we expect isolated thundery activity and light rain over Delhi and NCR after next 24 hours.

Similar situation is likely to continue for another 2 to 3 days. Thereafter, a Western Disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayas by October 5 or 6. During that time, the intensity and spread of rainfall may increase but only spot rain is expected in Delhi.

For the last many days dry weather conditions have been prevailing over Delhi and NCR. This region has not seen any rainfall after September 15. Nevertheless, the expected rainy spell will in no way benefit Delhi due to increased moisture in the air. This will help in further breeding of mosquitoes, increasing the fears of dengue and chikungunya outbreak in the national capital.
