Unrelenting Heat For Delhi, Mercury To Rise Further

Capital city Delhi observed heat wave conditions in many pockets, more so for the outskirts. Both the record observatories, Safdarjung and Palam, clocked temperatures close to 44°C, about 4°C above normal, not amounting to heat wave conditions.  Practically, it was sizzling through the day with ‘loo’ conditions around mid-day. The majority of other observatories in the Delhi area breached the 45°C mark, registering heat wave conditions. Narela recorded the highest temperature of 47.1°C, about 7°C above normal, leading to severe heatwave conditions.

In the absence of any active weather system, Delhi will continue to be swept by dry northwesterly winds.  Mercury is expected to rise to about 45°C at all those places in Delhi/NCR, which skipped the blaze over the last two days. Safdarjung and Palam will have the mercury rising to 45°C, closer to the weekend.  Surface winds will be moderately strong and therefore, take the sting out, partially.

Sun will be hot and shining well today, throughout the day. Some medium and high clouds over the subsequent days will not suffice to restrict the temperatures. ‘Loo’ conditions are going to be a regular feature for the next 4-5 days. There is the likelihood of some respite next week. A couple of cyclonic circulations over the plains in the vicinity of Delhi will change the wind pattern. Also, the proximity of an east-west trough, running close to the capital will raise the chance of long outstanding pre-monsoon activity. Though, a little early to predict, Delhi/NCR can expect some relief rain and thunderstorms next week around 19th-20th of June.
