Understanding the consecutive weather systems over East India

One after another well-marked low pressure area is hitting the state of West Bengal. If we look back the last couple of years this consecutive and significant low pressure area has not happened over the region. But we are now witnessing such consecutive weather systems over the region; this can be attributed to the MJO (Madden Julian Oscillation). It is presently located over South China Sea and is forming one after another typhoon over the region.

The part of this system is crossing Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and reaching Bay of Bengal. Upon reaching Bay of Bengal the system is intensifying further and affecting the Gangetic plains, Odisha and Jharkhand.

In addition of this the sea surface temp is also the reason for low pressure area over the region. The temperature is supposed to be 26.5 degree Celsius for the formation of a low pressure area. But presently the temperature of North Bay of Bengal is around 28-30 degree Celsius.

In the initial one and a half months of Monsoon, due to the El Nino condition, no significant rain has been seen over the Gangetic plains. But with the system, they are managed to a normal.

At present condition, except Musrhidabad which is rain deficient by 17%. The figure is almost double over Nadia and close to double over North Pargana and both Midnapore. Fairly widespread moderate to heavy rain is expected in the next 24 hours.

Another system is expected to form over the same area around August 26.

MJO normally moves in an easterly direction throughout the world, carrying mainly rainy clouds.
