Water crisis in Chennai

Chennai has been reeling under an acute water crisis since the last sometime now. The situation grimed recently when a few Chennai Malls resorted to water rationing and the situation made it to headlines nationally.

The water shortage is slowly crippling the hospitality industry as well with multiple restaurants cutting down their business hours and

According to a media report, a popular mall in South Chennai has reduced its water consumption by 30% in the last few days.

With few signs of rains across the state and reservoirs running dry, Chennai’s IT firms and restaurants have cut down operations, residents struggle to book tankers and the state government has begun disconnecting water connections to houses for illegally drawing water.

The reason for this can be traced down to the poor rainfall performance over the region in the last some time. Northeast Monsoon is the backbone of rain for the state of Tamil Nadu.  Last year the season set in quite late over the region. And not just this, all the four months of the Northeast Monsoon season underperformed in Chennai. The state of Tamil Nadu was running rain deficient by 44%.

Post-Monsoon season was also not very sufficing. Although, Southwest Monsoon, is not the main rainy season for the state, but it has been terrible till now in the last 15 days.

This cascading effect of accumulating rain deficiencies has led to a drought like condition over the region.
