Mumbai rains have remained light during the last 24 hours, wherein Colaba recorded 6 mm of rainfall, while Santa Cruz saw just 0.3 mm of rains. And with Monsoon underperforming in August so far we expect this trend to extend for the remaining days of the month. The typical Mumbai rains are not likely to make an appearance for the rest of August. However, light rains with a few moderate spells can not be ruled out.
The first half of the Monsoon season was good for Mumbai, wherein June ended on a satisfactory note with normal rains. The month of July saw some heavy showers, the city just stopped short of breaking the all-time record.
August too started on a promising note and Mumbai in the first five days did see some three-digit rainfall. However, since then, the Southwest Monsoon has only gone weak in the city.
In fact, Mumbai rains have remained almost silent with no double-digit rainfall being observed from August 6 until now, including a day wherein the rains had remained completely absent.
Mumbai has recorded 321 mm of rain so far against the August normal of 585 mm. And with only a week left for the month to get over, we do not expect Mumbai rains to catch up with the deficiency.
For the next 48 hours, Mumbai rains will remain light. Although some moderate spells may lash the city by the end of the month, these would not be enough to cover up the shortfall.
In general, Mumbai rains remain active from June to September. The pre-Monsoon month of May also records some patchy rains. Similarly, the withdrawal of Monsoon gives light patchy rains in October. However, the remaining six months from November to April observe absolutely dry weather.
Out of the four Monsoon months, two have performed well this time. However, August is under-performing. And we have to wait to see what September has in store for the city.
As of now, we do not expect heavy Mumbai rains to make an appearance, at least for the rest of August. The typical Mumbai rains would surely be missed by the Mumbaikars.
