Typhoon Wipha hits Japan, 13 killed; dozens missing

October 16, 2013 12:38 PM |

At least 13 people have been killed in a powerful typhoon that hit Japan’s east coast during rush hours on Wednesday.

Typhoon Wipha lead to widespread damage in Izu Oshima island-one of the worst affected places due to landslides and flooding. The island recorded about 800 mm of rain in the 24 hours up to Wednesday morning - more than twice the usual monthly rainfall for October.

The typhoon also pummeled the capital city Tokyo but spared any major damage as it brushed past Tokyo and moved up Japan's Pacific coastline.

In the northern reach, Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant is on guard as torrential heavy rains and strong winds originating from the typhoon could increase the risk of contaminated water leaking to open sea and spreading to larger area. Earlier this year, contaminated water from the plant had leaked into the sea while cleaning a tank from rain water after another typhoon had lashed it.
