Northeast Monsoon, the principal rainy season for Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and other parts of Peninsular India, is likely to make its onset behind its scheduled dates. The normal date of onset of the Northeast Monsoon is around 20 October with a deviation of about a week on either side.
The rainfall activity over Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu that occurs around middle of October is considered as the onset of Northeast Monsoon. Weather systems in the Bay of Bengal and trough of low-pressure systems coming in succession from the Andaman Sea in the Bay of Bengal are vital in bringing good rain over Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. However, this year the weak weather system in the Bay of Bengal remained insignificant in infusing wet spells over Peninsular India.
Typhoon Koppu building in the West Pacific, which is heading towards Philippines and speeding away towards Japan, is also pulling away the flow of winds and is not allowing the winds to change into north easterly. In short, there is still some remnants of south westerly winds and weak north easterly winds along the East Coast of India. Due to the situation, there is a possible delay in the onset of Northeast Monsoon.
According to Skymet, it will take a while before the wind pattern changes in order to prepare a ground for the arrival of Northeast Monsoon over India.
