Twin earthquakes of magnitude 5 hit Nicobar Islands

What can be called series of earthquakes, another quake measuring 5.0 magnitude on the Richter scale had hit Nicobar Islands region around 9.55 pm on Saturday. This was the second earthquake within a time span of 24 hours.

On Saturday morning, an earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude had rocked the Nicobar Islands about 4:44 am. The depth of the earthquake was reported at 10-km, centered at a latitude of 7.3°N and longitude of 94.4°E.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties till now.

Just a month and half back i.e. on February 28, the island was struck with another earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale.

Not only this, on March 23, twin earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.1 had struck the Andaman Islands within a time span of mere 10 minutes.

The first quake had hit the island region at 4.59 pm with a depth of 10 km and was centered at latitude of 14.2°N and longitude of 92.9°E. The second quake which followed in quick succession at 5.09 pm and was centered at latitude of 14°N and longitude of 93.1°E at depth of 60 km.

The Andaman and the Nicobar Islands region is prone to earthquakes. According to weathermen, it is not unusual for the islands to see two or more quakes in a day.
