Torrential rains trigger landslide in Indonesia, death toll rises above 18

Heavy rains caused landslide near Jemblung village in Indonesia's main island of Java. At least 18 people have been reported to be dead, while more than 90 are still missing.

According to state national disaster agency, hundreds of houses had been destroyed by the landslide and over 400 residents have been moved to shelter homes.

Relief operation was hampered due to inclement weather conditions and difficulty accessing the disaster site. According to meteorologists, more rain is expected to lash the region.

As per local media reports, over 1,000 rescuers, including police and soldiers, are engaged in the operation.

On December 11, another landslide in a nearby village had killed one man and forced hundreds to evacuate.

Flash floods and fatal landslides triggered by seasonal downpours are common in Indonesia.
