Updated on Aug 16, 12:15 PM: Coastal Karnataka continued to witness moderate to heavy rains during the last 24 hours as well, wherein Honavar recorded 84 mm of rains, followed by Karwar 50 mm, and Mangaluru 24 mm. These rains were on account of persistent off-shore trough along the West Coast. Meanwhile, interior parts of the state settled with isolated light rains only.
According to weathermen, Monsoon rains would now reduce but moderate rains with one or two heavy spells at isolated pockets of Coastal Karnataka would continue for another 24-48 hours. Thereafter, rains would reduce further and only light rains with isolated moderate rains would be expected over the region.
Updated on Aug 15, 1:15 PM: The state of Karnataka received heavy to extremely heavy rains in the last 24 hours. While the city of Agumbe recorded 212 mm of rains in the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Karwar received 171 mm, Honavar 82 mm, Mangaluru 58 mm, Kalaburgi 31 mm and Madikeri 53 mm.
Skymet now expects some relief from these flooding rains in the coming days. Rains would start reducing on August 15 itself but moderate rains with few heavy spells would continue across the state for the next 24 hours. However, after this, no significant rains and thundershowers are expected for the next three-four days over the state.
Updated on Aug 14, 1:50 PM: Flood situation in the state of Karnataka is now improving as flood waters have started to recede in the affected areas. The death toll today has risen to 54, and around 4 lakh people are currently in more than 1100 relief camps.
The Karnataka government will celebrate Independence day in a "simple" way due to most parts of the being affected by floods and incessant rains.
Updated on Aug 13, 12:50 PM: Massive floods in Karnataka continue to wreak havoc, with the death toll reaching 48. More than 2738 villages have been affected leaving over 40 thousand houses damaged. So far, over 6.5 lakh people have been rescued and more than 1200 centres have opened for the displaced.
Updated on Aug 12, 04:45 PM: 5 bridges and 300 houses had been damaged or completely destroyed due to floods in Belthangady. CM BS Yediyurappa announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each. Rs 10,000 will be distributed to the victims as an emergency relief.

Due to heavy rains and floods, death toll in the state has now reached to 40 people with at least 343 animal lives claimed. Parts of Malnad and coastal areas are the worst affected wherein 14 people remain missing and at least 20 thousand homes damaged. 17 districts and 2028 villages continue to remain affected.

Updated on Aug 10, 06:45 PM: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said the state government has sought Rs 3,000 crore as relief from the Centre as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the state.
However, in the next 24 hours, we expect moderate to heavy rainfall along the coast while scattered light rains might occur over South Karnataka and at a few places over North.
Release of five lakh cusecs of water from Narayanpur Dam in Yadgir district has cut off road connectivity downstream Krishna river in Yerragudi and Yellagundio.
South Western Railway Mysuru Divison has cancelled the train due to heavy downpour and consequent water flowing on the tracks at several locations between Kumsi and Talguppa Railway stations in Shivamogga – Talguppa section of Mysuru Division.

At present, an off-shore Trough is extending from South Gujarat to Kerala coast. The system is likely to decrease its strength gradually. Thus, the rain intensity is now likely to reduce over the state. The rainfall activity along the coast as well as interior parts of Karnataka will also plunge.However, the rains will keep continuing with a decreased intensity. In the next 24 hours, we expect moderate to heavy rainfall along the coast while scattered light rains might occur over South Karnataka and at a few places over North.
Rains will decrease further from most parts of Karnataka after 24 to 48 hours. It may enhance yet again on August 12.

Updated on Aug 10, 1:00 AM: Rescue operations were in full swing in Mallapur village near Kadra and, Kaiga in Uttara Kannada wherein 750 people today, bringing the total number of rescued personnel in this area alone to 2219.
According to DV Sadananda Gowda, Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister, the Centre has released ₹128 crore for flood relief works in the state of Karnataka.

Published on Aug 8, 2019: Vigorous Monsoon conditions have given incessant rains over the coastal and northern districts of Karnataka. Torrential rains for the past 2-3 days have triggered floods in around 11 districts of the state.
Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc and so far have claimed seven lives. Normal life has come to an halt, with almost 26 state and national highways being shut.
Belgaum, Bijapur, Belagavi, Kodagu, Shimoga and Gadarpur are are some of the worst sufferers of the floods. Particularly, Belgaum that has been sharing border with South Maharashtra which has also been recording exceptionally heavy rains. The city has recorded 515 mm of rains for last three days i.e. August 6 recorded 158 mm, August 7 saw 170 mm and August 8 received 187 mm.
In fact, coastal stations of Mangaluru, Karwar and Honavar have also been receiving extremely heavy rains.
In wake of these extremely heavy rains, all the water bodies be it lakes, rivers or dams have reached to their peak, with some over flowing as well. State authorities of Maharashtra have also released water, making flood situation grim for Karnataka.
Weathermen are predicting critical times ahead as heavy rains would continue for next 2-3 days. The depression is seen over central parts of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas of Maharashtra. It has also kept the off- shore trough along the West Coast active along with strong winds from Arabian Sea infusing strong Monsoon surge over Karnataka.
With the huge inflow of water, Kabini dam has almost reached 2281.5 feet against its capacity of 2284 feet. Reportedly, once falling short of water, Kabini Dam has released 40000 thousands cusec waters.
