Torrential rain lashes Tamil Nadu, more heavy showers on cards

Low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low and now it is over Southwest Bay of Bengal. It will further intensify into a depression by today evening and will move in West Northwest direction towards north Tamil Nadu coast. It may cross North Tamil Nadu coast my morning of November 11.

During last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rain occurred over coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Karaikal recorded 287 mm, Parangipattainum and Cuddalore recorded 129 mm each, Thanjavur 101 mm and Chennai Nungambakkam recorded 27 mm rain. Moderate to heavy showers are going on over many parts of South coastal Tamil Nadu.

Rain activities will intensify once again over Chennai and suburbs and there may be heavy to very heavy showers which may lead to widespread flooding and water logging. Wind speed over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will be 45-55 Kmph gusting to 60 Kmph. Sea conditions may also become rough along the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast.

A deluge is possible over Cuddalore, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Puducherry along with Chennai. Rain activities are expected to continue until the evening of November 12 thereafter intensity of will start decreasing. November and December are the favorable months for cyclogenesis over Bay of Bengal as well as over Arabian Sea.

Another low-pressure area is expected to develop over South Andaman Sea by November 13 which will also move towards the Tamil Nadu and Andhra coast intensifying further. Therefore, the successive weather systems which develops over Bay of Bengal will keep the northeast monsoon active.
