July 21, 2016 1:40 PM |

Darjeeling landslideDarjeeling has been witnessing heavy to very heavy Monsoon rains in the last few consecutive days. These rains have also triggered landslides, which has so far claimed three lives in the region.

As per the local reports, they lost their lives as their house collapsed in landslide at Lodhma region. Darjeeling has received 48 mm of rain in 24 hours.

According to Skymet Weather, the axis of Monsoon trough is presently running close to the foothills of Himalayas, giving incessant rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also marked over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal which has further enhanced the rain activity.

In wake of this, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will continue over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal including Darjeeling during the next 48 hours. We can expect some respite thereafter as the trough is likely to move southwards.

These incessant rains have been causing frequent landslides in Darjeeling and adjoining areas. This has also disrupted the traffic plying on National Highway 10 that connects Siliguri to Gangtok in Sikkim.

Darjeeling is a landslide prone area during the four-month long Monsoon season. The hill-town has recorded 613.3 mm of rain so far in the month of July.
