Heavy to very heavy Monsoon rains have been occurring over Tripura since really long. The depression which formed in the Bay of Bengal and crossed Bangladesh coast weakened into a low-pressure area and passed Tripura eventually. This system gave hefty showers over the capital city of Agartala and adjoining regions. Agartala recorded 86 mm of rains and Sabroom in South district witnessed 172.6 mm of rains which triggered floods in Tripura.

This system has now weakened into a cyclonic circulation and lies over Assam and adjoining Nagaland region. It is expected that Monsoon rains would continue to occur over Tripura in the coming days as well.

In wake of the rains and Tripura being a plain state, many districts are experiencing floods. As per media reports, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb quoted that over 10,000 people have taken shelter in 76 camps across the state. In fact, two people have been reported dead in wake of the torrential rains causing floods.

In fact, even after rain stops, the rain in the catchment area and the waterbodies will keep water levels on rise. Thus, flood situation would remain grim in Tripura.
