Heavy to very heavy rains have been lashing foothills of Himalayas during last 24 hours, creating flood like situation. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, active Monsoon trough is running close to foothills through Bareilly, Sultanpur, Buxar, Bankura, Haldia and further up to Bay of Bengal.
The weather system has been influencing the Monsoon surge over the region, leading to good weather activities over the foothills. Moreover, this trough has given extremely heavy rains over terai parts of Nepal.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh recorded 49 mm of rain, followed by Bahraich at 28 mm. While in Nepal, Nepalgunj received whopping 24 mm of rain, Pokhara 224 mm, Bhairawa 133 mm and Dhangadhi 119 mm.
As per the latest forecast by Skymet, more heavy rains are expected to lash parts of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as Monsoon trough will be oscillating southwards near Bareilly and Sultanpur. With this, flood scare is looming large over parts of Uttar Pradesh as they are usually drained by a number of rivers, which have their catchments in the steep and geologically nascent Himalayas.
In wake of the incessant rain activity, rivers like Sharda and Ghagra which originate from Nepal are expected to swell and flow above danger levels. The affected areas in Uttar Pradesh may include districts of Sravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Baalrampur and Siddharth Nagar.
